*Please note the change in start time to 2.45pm to ensure a favourable tide*
Parking: We suggest local competitors walk or cycle to the event. Visiting competitors can park in the Royal Cork Yacht Club or in available spaces in the locality.
Registration: Registration is open from 12:00 – 13:45 in Power’s Shop. Here competitors will sign consent forms and collect their race number/chip, swim hat, food vouchers plus any event freebies.
Transition: Competitors can drop their bikes and kit to the Hugh Coveney pier from 12:00.
Briefing: The event safety briefing will take place at 14:00 outside Barry’s Centra Crosshaven. All competitors must attend this briefing.
Swim Start: The swim will start at 14:45 sharp from the Point Slip near Crosshaven Boatyard, this is a change to previous years whereby it would have started at Currabinny pier. The swim will leave the slip, swim out to a buoy, turn left and proceed to the Hugh Coveney pier which is a total of 500 metres. Marshalls and safety will be on hand at all times. Starting on time is essential as any delay will result in a swim against the tide. Swimmers should dress appropriately for the conditions and their ability.
Swim/Bike Transition: Swimmers will exit the water at the pier, a new semi submerged ramp will be in place this year to make the exit smoother. Swimmers will follow the designated route in transition, collecting their bike, putting on their helmet and exiting the pier to the right on to the bike course, following marshalls instructions at all times. Relay teams will wait for a handover on at the water side of the Carrigaline end of the pier.
Bike Course: Cyclists will proceed right out of the pier, up on to the main Crosshaven to Carrigaline road, travel 5k to O’Leary’s Cross, turn safely at the turning point and return to the pier, following the lower pier road. A total of 10km. Cyclists must slow returning to transition as this is a highly congested area. Again relay teams will handover at the water’s side of the Carrigaline end of the pier. NO DRAFTING ON THE BIKE COURSE.
Run Course: Runners will exit the pier to the left heading for the village, turn around the village roundabout and head along the main Carrigaline road out to a turning point at the picnic area between Lime Kiln corner and Rabbit Island. Runners will return to Crosshaven, finishing in a finish chute outside Centra Crosshaven.
Finish: Finishers are asked to clear the finish area and gather on the grass or village square. Finishers will receive a finishers medal and complimentary food will be provided from the front of Centra. A short prizegiving will take place at the end of the event.
Roads: The roads will be closed from the start of the race until 4.30pm at which point, if required, runners will moved on to the railway line/footpaths. Diversions will be in place from O’Leary’s Cross to the Aghamarta/Forge/Rugby Club/Drake’s Point road from 2.15pm until 4.30pm. This will also impact buses. See image below for the impact on the area.
Toilets: Available at the Hugh Coveney Pier, Royal Cork Yacht Club or any of the local cafe’s/pubs. No shower facilities available.
Sustainability: Competitors are asked to follow the leave no trace principle and ensure they do not litter the course or transition area.
Bags: Swimmers can tag bags with their names and phone numbers, leave them with the Centra van at the slip before entering the water and collect them from the finish area after the race. We take no responsibility for lost valuables or bags.
Safety: The event will be well marshalled, please respect these volunteers. The Red Cross will be supporting the event with ambulances and there will be other emergency services on active call in the area. If a competitor has any health or safety concerns, please contact a marshal immediately.
